Housemarque's Co-Founder Is Leaving, Three Months Before Saros Ships

Ilari Kuittinen is stepping down after 31 years, and he is not the only senior departure at PlayStation Studios this month.

Ilari Kuittinen, who co-founded Housemarque in 1995 and ran it through every one of its reinventions, is leaving the studio. Thirty-one years is an extraordinarily long run in this industry — long enough that Housemarque shipped Amiga games before most of its current staff were born.

The timing is the interesting part

Housemarque is deep into Saros, its first game since Returnal and the studio's second since Sony bought it in 2021. A founder stepping away in the run-up to a launch is not automatically a bad sign — plenty of people leave once a project is locked and the hard decisions are behind them — but it is the kind of thing that only reads as routine in hindsight.

Kuittinen's own framing has been that this is a planned exit rather than a break, and nothing in the reporting suggests otherwise.

It is not an isolated departure

This lands in the same month as another studio-head change inside PlayStation Studios. Individually each of these is a normal corporate event; together they are a reminder that Sony's first-party group has been reorganising more or less continuously since the live-service retrenchment, and that the people who built the studios Sony acquired are now several years into their earn-outs.

What it means for Saros

Probably very little in the short term. Housemarque's identity has always been remarkably consistent — dense arcade shooting with a modern skin — and that survived the jump from Super Stardust to Resogun to Returnal without its founder writing the code. The longer question is what the studio becomes once the last of the people who set that identity have gone.
