Sony Puts Free Ad-Supported TV on the PS5 Dashboard

Live TV on PS5 launched in the US on Sunday with more than 100 free channels. It is the first time Sony has asked PS5 owners to sit through adverts on the console itself.

Sony has switched on Live TV on PS5, a free app that puts more than a hundred linear channels and an on-demand catalogue on the console dashboard. It is live in the United States now, and it costs nothing — because it is paid for with adverts.

That last part is the story. The PS5 has carried streaming apps since launch, but every one of them belonged to somebody else: you brought your Netflix subscription, or your Disney+ login, and Sony took a cut of the store transaction and stayed out of the way. Live TV is Sony's own surface, with Sony selling the inventory against it.

What is actually in it

The line-up is the familiar FAST bundle — free ad-supported streaming television — of news, sport, reality, classic film and themed rerun channels, plus a video-on-demand shelf that also breaks for ads. It is the same shape as Pluto TV or the Roku Channel, and much of the same catalogue circulates between all of them. Nobody is cancelling a subscription over it.

Why Sony wants it anyway

Console makers have spent this generation trying to turn hardware they sell once into revenue they collect continuously. Subscriptions did most of that work; advertising is the piece that has been missing, and it is the piece that scales without Sony having to fund anything. A channel grid is close to free to operate compared with a first-party game.

It also gives Sony something it has never had on PS5: an ad slot it owns, on a screen that tens of millions of people already look at every day, next to the tiles for games it publishes. Whether that stays confined to the Live TV app is the thing worth watching.

The part that will decide how this lands

Free TV on a console is not, by itself, controversial — the Xbox and smart TVs have carried FAST apps for years and nobody minded. The friction, if it comes, will be about placement: an app you can ignore is very different from ad-supported content promoted on the home row. Sony has kept it to an app for now.

Live TV on PS5 is available in the US today. Sony has not said which market gets it next.
